Mythbusting the Chicago School: Technology, Politics, and Evolution of the Skyscraper, 1871-1934

The Cliff Dwellers, 200 South Michigan Avenue, 22nd floor, Chicago

will show how traditional histories of Chicago skyscrapers haven’t fully accounted for the variety of forms and types that emerged in the city between the Great Fire and the Great Depression. Using digital reconstructions, archival documents, and contemporary articles from the professional press, Leslie will demonstrate the influence of emerging technologies such as pressed brick, riveted steel, and plate glass combined with economic and political influences to suggest new approaches that were developed and exploited by architects and clients looking for any possible advantage in the city’s explosive real estate market.

Speaker: Prof. Leslie has taught building design, history, and technology at Iowa State University since 2000. He has degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Columbia University. Prior to teaching he spent seven years with Norman Foster and Partners, London, where he worked on projects in the United States and the Middle East. Leslie is the author of Louis I. Kahn: Building Art, Building Science (Braziller, 2005), Chicago Skyscrapers, 1871-1934 (University of Illinois, 2013), and Beauty’s Rigor: Patterns of Production in the Work of Pier Luigi Nervi (University of Illinois, 2017). He has held visiting positions at the University of Technology-Sydney, Australia, the Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar, Germany, the Università di Bologna, Italy, and the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University, where he currently holds an adjunct position. In 2013-2014, Leslie was the Booth Family Rome Prize Fellow in Historic Preservation at the American Academy in Rome, and in 2018 he was elevated to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects for his contributions to architectural education and research.

Adhesion of Self-Adhered Vapor Retarders Applied to Concrete Roof Decks

            your computer

**This event will now be hosted via webinar.**

In recent years, the roofing industry has recognized and reaffirmed the importance of installing a vapor retarder over concrete roof decks to protect the applied roofing system. Without a vapor retarder, the moisture can accumulate in the layers under the roof membrane and cause deterioration and loss of strength of the roofing system. These problems can lead to loss of attachment, wind damage, or blow off. Roofing system manufacturers and industry standards lack practical information about when the concrete is dry enough to install the vapor retarder and whether the moisture in the concrete will affect the adhesion of the vapor retarder over time.

To help the industry with this issue, developed a testing program to evaluate the sensitivity of vapor retarder adhesion to age of concrete at the time of vapor retarder is applied. We monitored the pull-off strength of adhered vapor retarders over time with pull off tests starting 48 hours after vapor retarder application and extending out to approximately 21 months after application.

Speaker: Mary Donlon, PE, is a Consulting Engineer at SGH with over five years of experience as a member of its Building Technology group. She has extensive experience including roofing, panelized wall construction, industrial rope access, contemporary walls, plazas, windows and flooring.

POSTPONED - Presenting Jennifer Park, 2019 Dubin Family Young Architect Award Recipient

Chicago Architecture Center, 111 East Wacker Drive, Gand Lecture Hall

**POSTPONED - we are planning to reschedule in May.**

Jennifer Park, AIA, NCARB, is a in Chicago and recipient of the 2019 Dubin Family Young Architect Award, presented by the AIA Chicago Foundation. The award was established in 1983 to recognize excellence in ability and exceptional contributions by Chicago area architects between the ages of twenty-five and thirty-nine, or one who has been licensed less than 10 years.

Design leadership, design perspective and design services distinguish and identify Jennifer as an architect. At Brininstool + Lynch, she plays a critical role in establishing the future of the design-focused firm. Previously, Park was principal and owner of Jurassic Studio, a design firm known for its exploration of the relevance of patterns and ornamentation to create an architecture of effect and meaning. Jennifer's practice is reinforced by a decade of teaching.  In her current position of Visiting Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Second Year at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), she teaches the fundamentals of form and tectonics, but believes the most fundamental lesson is to enjoy what they are doing. Jennifer also advocates for diversity in both the academic and professional setting through her work as the Co-chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee at IIT and for the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Roundtable of AIA Chicago. In this role, she champions the statement "what is good for business is creativity and what is fuels creativity is diversity."

Jennifer will speak about her definition of the Social Practice of Architecture. The practice of architecture requires architects to work in service of people and communities creating environments that enable and animate their lives. To do so, we need to understand the social circumstances in which they live work and play.  However, a "social practice" is also looking at how we practice: with fellow architects, for future architects, and beyond current environments and context. The social practice of architecture involves looking at how we enable a more equitable and social profession, how to train future architects, and how we might reengage social significance through design.

The presentation will start at 6:00 pm. Light refreshments provided.

            Prairie Grassroots 五福彩票app手机版 - CANCELLED!

            Springfield, Illinois

AIA Illinois made the following announcement on March 12:

            Dear Citizen Architects,

We regret to inform you that the Secretary of State has CANCELED all Activities at the Illinois State Capitol until further notice in an effort to limit all possibilities of transmission of the COVID-19 virus. These activities include all public and scheduled tours and organizational lobby days - including our Prairie Grassroots - in order to prevent large group gatherings on the Capitol grounds.

Currently, legislative session is delayed. They are scheduled to return on Tuesday, March 24, but have announced they are taking the decision to return on a week by week basis. We will continue to keep you informed. Right now it is hard to reschedule a lobby day without knowing if or when legislators will be back in session. More than likely, we will be planning “virtual” lobby days encouraging you to make calls and send emails from the comfort of your office or 五福彩票app手机版.

We sincerely thank all of you who registered to attend, and we are disappointed as we too were looking forward to a fantastic 16th year of Prairie Grassroots. However, the health and safety of our members is most important, and we support the Secretary of State’s decision.

            Be well,
